Box of Porcellionides Pruinosus Orange
Porcellio laevis "orange" is a species of woodlouse that lives in moist areas and is often found under dead wood and/or stones.
It is a colorful variety of the Porcellio laevis species, which is beautifully orange, as the name suggests.
The legs and antennae are also orange. In the wild, its natural color is grayish-brown. Males have long, spear-shaped uropods and the dorsal shield is slightly convex and smooth.
The species can grow to about 18 to 20 mm in length and has two pairs of pleural lungs. Many varieties are known in the hobby in terms of markings and coloration, and these are successfully bred.
Other varieties of Porcellio laevis include "wildtype or black", "dairy cows", "milkback", "dalmatian", "ghost", "marbled" and "white".
This species is not common in the Netherlands, but does occur. It is a widespread species that nowadays occurs just about everywhere in the world. Apparently, P. laevis was first recorded in Britain in the 13th century. Most likely the species originated in North Africa and from there ended up in Britain. In the wild, this species does well on rotting wood and decaying leaves.
However, it is important to note that these isopods have a high requirement for animal protein. For example, fish food, dried flea crustaceans, dried fish, dried shrimp and snake feathers are suitable as food. Do not forget to offer the necessary calcium in the form of pieces of sepia.
The bottom preferably has a moisture gradient. They are quite active animals that like to hang in groups, upside down, on the underside of a piece of bark
